Back in 2011, a group of consumers filed a lawsuit stating Apple’s App Store is a monopoly since it is the only software marketplace available for the iPhone. That suit has now been dismissed by the overseeing U.S. District Judge, according to Bloomberg. However, the dismissal was only due to the plaintiffs not being “in a legal position to bring the suit as they hadn’t bought the applications at issue in the case....

UPDATE: Officiality Well, by now is seems pretty obvious that Apple isn’t releasing anything huge before Christmas. From what we’ve heard, just about everything in the Macintosh lineup is scheduled to get a hit at Macworld (more on this to come soon). iPods are staying put for awhile and the iPhone won’t see revision 2 until around May – in time to ship in Asia. That leaves the AppleTV line – Apple’s “hobby”....

Apple has reportedly acquired database company FoundationDB, according to a new report from TechCrunch. The report cites sources and notes that the company is no longer offering downloads of its main database software product after posting the following notice to its website: Thank you for your support of FoundationDB over the last five years. We’re grateful to have shared our vision of building the best database software and we strongly value your participation in this community....

Happy Apple Earnings Day! Apple has just announced its Q2 2018 results with $61.1 billion in revenue and $13.8 billion in profit earned from selling 52.2 million iPhones, 9.1 million iPads, and 4.07 million Macs. Apple had offered revenue guidance between $60 billion and $62 billion. That compares to $52.9b in revenue, $11.03 billion profit, 50.7 million iPhones, 8.92 million iPads, and 4.19 million Macs sold the same quarter a year ago; and $88....

Earlier in the year, the Bluetooth SIG appointed an Apple employee as secretary of the board. The two institutions are developing their relationship further today with the announcement that Apple is now a Promoter Member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. This is the highest level with the organization and gives Apple voting rights. Promoter members get voting rights on Bluetooth corporate matters and a guaranteed seat on the board of directors....

A new Apple patent details a stylus that can be used without a screen. It specifically mentions “force sensors” which leads us to believe that this could be used with future versions of the Mac that have Force Touch trackpads. Apple patents don’t typically translate to real products, however, it is interesting to look at what the Cupertino company is working on behind the curtain. What’s interesting is that the patent states that this could go beyond even Apple devices, and could be used with 3D objects in the real world, using the motion and accelerometer data within the stylus itself to track the information....

As it continues to expand its video efforts, Apple has hired the former president and general manager of WGN America and Tribune Studios, Matt Cherniss. According to a report from Variety, Cherniss will oversee development at Apple’s growing worldwide video unit. Apple earlier this summer hired Jamie Ehrlicht and Zack Van Amburg, two top Sony Television executives to lead the worldwide programming unit. Cherniss will serve under Ehrlicht and Hamburg, both of whom report directly to Eddy Cue....

Apple has hired Jonathan Zdziarski, a forensics consult and security researcher who has been heavily involved in the iOS security community. Zdziarski was notably vocal during Apple’s conflict with the FBI last year, offering his technical expertise against claims being made by the government. Zdziarski publicly shared the news with an announcement on his personal blog: You may recognize Zdziarski’s name from many iOS security-related stories over the years. This decision marks the conclusion of what I feel has been a matter of conscience for me over time....

Leo Laporte and Mike Elgan of popular podcasting networking TWiT today conducted an interview with Bill Fernandez, the fourth employee to work at Apple. At Apple, Fernandez was a user interface architect and inventor. He worked on both the Apple I and Apple II and contributed to the user interface of Mac OS, QuickTime, and HyperCard. Fernandez is widely credited as being the person who introduced Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak to each other....

As it has done in past years, Apple this week celebrated Pride 2017 in a handful of cities around the world, participating in parades in San Francisco, New York City, and Toronto. Speaking with Bloomberg today about Apple’s upcoming earnings call, Piper Jaffray’s Apple analyst Gene Munster said his most recent checks with suppliers in Asia and industry sources indicate Apple is moving to release a full-fledged television this year with a new remote. This is of course not the first time the analyst has predicted Apple will release an HDTV—rather than an updated set-top box—in 2013… Munster is expecting the Apple TV set to be one of three catalysts to help investors get behind Apple stock again in 2013....

Norfolk State University has announced a new partnership with Apple to provide every student with a 5G iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, Apple Smart Keyboard Folio, and AirPods Pro. NSU, the largest HBCU in Virginia, will also deploy MacBook Pros and iMacs to select students and design labs. In a press release, Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of education and enterprise marketing, said that Norfolk State is taking a “bold step forward” by providing students with equal access to Apple devices....

Apple is paying another round of bonuses to some of its staff members, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Notably, this is the second round of such bonuses, having previously issued bonuses ranging from $50,000 to $180,000 back in December. The bonuses come as Apple faces increased competition for top talent in Silicon Valley from the likes of Meta, Google, and Microsoft. Apple is facing a new class action lawsuit over an alleged design flaw in the Apple Watch Series 6. As reported by Bloomberg, the proposed class action lawsuit alleges that the Apple Watch Series 6 suffers from a design flaw that makes the screen “prone to breaking or detaching” and exposing “razor-sharp edges.” The customers behind the class action lawsuit say that Apple did not provide enough room inside the Apple Watch Series 6’s design to account for potential swelling of the battery....

Customer experience analytics firm Forsee is out today with its study of holiday customer satisfaction for the top 500 Internet retailers by revenue. Forsee has Apple at a four-year low in customer satisfaction in its survey of 24,000 customers during prime Thanksgiving and Christmas shopping seasons. Apple slipped three points to a satisfaction score of 80/100 this year, putting Apple at its lowest in four years and bumping it out of the top 5....
