Tim Cook and U2 announced that the band’s new album “Songs of Innocence” would be automatically gifted to Apple’s over 500 million iTunes users last week following the announcement of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but many iTunes users were not happy with seeing music from U2 added to their iTunes libraries (even for free). While iTunes supports a way to “hide” previous purchases, the complaints and confusion apparently grew loud enough to warrant a dedicated support site for permanently removing the free U2 album from iTunes purchase history....

Apple has announced that one of iOS 9’s big new features, App Thinning (or “app slicing”), has been delayed due to an issue with iOS 9. App Thinning was announced at WWDC as a way to help trim down the size of large applications by letting developers mark assets for each specific type of device. When users download the app, the App Store will determine which device they have and only require them to download the assets necessary to run on their device....

WWDC 2020 will begin next Monday, on June 22, and Apple is getting ready for its first totally virtual conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In preparation for the event, Apple has just released a new update for its official Apple Developer app, which will let users and developers watch the entire sessions online. The Sacramento Business Journal is reporting that Apple has started work on a major new expansion at the company’s Elk Grove campus, which currently employs around 2,500 staff. Last week we learned that the Texas Attorney General was leading a multi-state probe against Apple and could potentially file a lawsuit over an unnamed violation of consumer law. Today, another multi-state probe is making the news for investigated Apple’s throttling of older iPhones. Reported by Reuters, the Arizona AG is heading up this multi-state investigation concerning the throttling of older iPhones leading to unexpected shutdowns. Specifically, the probe is looking at whether the “deliberate slowing of older iPhones violated deceptive trade practice laws” which is the same concern that the multi-state probe led by the Texas Attorney General has....

Using its clever advertising tactics, Apple began advertising its 7.9-inch iPad mini in several print magazines. As seen on the cover of the New Yorker above and TIME below, the ads highlight the device’s small, compact design and show how a user can get access to the same magazine content from Apple’s Newsstand feature. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Apple bust out advertising past the traditional TV spot this month, as it just began running 3D exploding iPod ads on several websites....

According to a new report from Digitimes, the Apple A15 chip will begin production in May. The production schedule lines up for the iPhone 13 launch in the fall. Uh oh. A few days after HomePod hitting the market, customers have noticed an unwelcome occurrence caused by Apple’s new smart speaker: wood staining. Apple admitted to Wirecutter who first noted the issue that HomePod’s base can indeed leave residue on certain wood countertops. Apple tells the publication that “the marks can improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface” and suggests that if it that doesn’t work, “try cleaning the surface with the manufacturer’s suggested oiling method....

As schools across the world adjust to distance learning, Apple has announced some new tools that aim to ease the transition to distance learning. Apple is announcing a free 30-minute one-on-one virtual coaching sessions with Apple Professional Learning Specialists and a new Apple Education remote learning video series. Apple has today announced an expansion of ResearchKit into studies for autism, epilepsy and melanoma. ResearchKit enables people to conduct distributed scientific research studies from an iPhone app, enabling higher participation rates than traditional medical research can provide. The new studies are being run by researchers in Duke University, Johns Hopkins and Oregon Health and Science University. ResearchKit is open-source. In the same statement, Apple says that over 50 researchers have already contributed to the project....

Tony Fadell, the Nest CEO who was Senior VP of Apple’s division from 2006 to 2008, says that Apple built prototypes of a similar device to Google Glass but “didn’t have time” to turn them into actual products. Interviewed as part of Fast Company‘s Oral History of Apple Design series, Fadell said: From the description, the prototypes sound rather more like virtual reality headsets than Google Glass so there may be some exaggeration going on here....

A report from CNBC this morning says Apple has cut over 200 employees from its top-secret “Project Titan” autonomous vehicle program. In a statement, however, the company says it still sees a “huge opportunity” in the space. An Apple spokesperson acknowledged the changes, but attributed them to staff restructuring rather than layoffs. Earlier this month Apple started selling a special edition version of its Woven Nylon Apple Watch band called Pride Edition. Featuring colors of the rainbow, the Pride Edition Woven Nylon band is very similar to the limited edition rainbow Apple Watch band gifted to employees who participated in last year’s San Francisco Pride parade. Since making the Pride Edition Woven Nylon band available for anyone to purchase, Apple has updated its store page to say that a portion of sales from the Pride Edition bands will benefit LGBTQ advocacy groups....
