Apple has settled a ten-year tax battle with France, agreeing to pay a reported half a billion Euros ($570M) in back tax. The French government had accused Apple of evading or avoiding tax due on sales made in France … The line between tax evasion, which is illegal, and aggressive tax-avoidance, which is legal, can often be a rather blurred one. Tax evasion is subject to prosecution, while no tax is payable in the case of tax avoidance....

The class-action lawsuit is being spearheaded by Hagens Berman, the law firm that has targeted Apple multiple times in the past. Most notably, Hagens Berman successfully went after Apple for e-book pricing fixing in 2013, leading to payouts directly to customers. The firm also represented small developers in a class-action lawsuit against Apple, which led to a $100 million settlement. The lawyers are also fighting an Apple Pay antitrust lawsuit on behalf of banks....

An Apple press release published today announced the impending availability of the iPad on Japan’s NTT DoCoMo carrier. According to the release, both the iPad Air and iPad mini will be available on the largest Japanese carrier on June 10th. The carrier has supported the iPhone since late 2013. Both tablets will work with the DoCoMo LTE network. The company’s iPad LTE plans are already listed on its website, though you won’t actually be able to buy the device just yet....

In the patent battle that feels as if it will never end, Apple has today asked the Supreme Court not to review Samsung’s latest appeals request in the two companies’ ongoing patent feud. Back in December, it was announced that Apple and Samsung had reached a $548 million settlement, but with a catch. Apple will soon open a new retail store The Bronx, New York City’s northernmost borough. On Friday, Apple publicly posted job openings for the new location on its Jobs website, inviting candidates to apply. Apple operates seven stores in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn, and one in both Queens and on Staten Island. The newly-announced location will be the first Apple Store in The Bronx, bridging the gap between Manhattan’s Upper West Side and Yonkers, New York, where Apple operates a store at Ridge Hill Mall....

Apple has cut Tim Cook’s 2016 pay by a little over $1.5M after the company failed to achieve both revenue and profit goals. The news that Cook’s compensation was cut from $10.28M in 2015 to $8.75M in 2016 was spotted in a regulatory filing by the WSJ. Cook wasn’t the only one to lose out … Apple said its annual sales of $215.6 billion were 3.7% below its target of $223....

Bloomberg today reports that Apple is developing a new 3D sensor system for the 2019 iPhone. This sensor would work differently to the TrueDepth sensor system used for Face ID and would be used to add depth sensing features to the rear camera. Adding depth data to the rear camera would allow for more advanced augmented reality applications. iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus simulate depth by using a dual-camera system, and comparing the parallax of the images from the two lenses....

Following its September event yesterday, Apple has quietly dropped the price of the 1 TB iPad Pro. This makes Apple’s pricing more competitive with third-party retailers, but there are rumors of a looming iPad Pro refresh. As first spotted by MacRumors, Apple’s 11-inch 1 TB iPad Pro with Wi-Fi is now $1,349, while the cellular model runs $1,499. That’s down from $1,549 and $1,699, respectively. Apple is encouraging its employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19 by offering paid time off for appointments and paid sick leave for those experiencing side effects, according to a new report by Bloomberg. Apple finally made the standalone 27-inch display we’ve all wanted since 2014. In the process, Apple retired the Intel 27-inch iMac without an Apple silicon-powered version planned for this year. Apple has just published a list of App Store improvements that will begin to go into effect next Wednesday, September 7th. The changes seek to remove broken and forgotten apps from the App Store, apps that are currently breaking App Store review guidelines, and that are just no longer functional. Apple’s AI expert, Tom Gruber, delivered a TED talk back in April extolling the benefits that AI may provide for us in the years to come. The video of the onstage presentation has now been released and gives us a better glimpse into the future Gruber imagines. His presentation focuses on what he calls “humanistic AI”, the belief that when machines get smarter, so will we. Following reports in recent weeks that Apple held talks regarding a potential investment in Softbank’s $100bn technology fund, today the company confirmed that it will indeed invest $1 billion into the project known as the “Softbank Vision Fund.” The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple confirmed the investment today and also offered a statement provided by company spokesperson Kristin Huguet. In the statement, the company says it thinks the investment will help “speed the development of technologies which may be strategically important to Apple....
