Security firm Check Point says in a recent Mobile Security Report that 40% of mobile devices are prone to cyber-attacks. In 2019 alone, 76% of all cyberattacks were financially motivated. Combine those two facts, and you’ll realize that your phone could be the gateway a criminal uses to steal your money. Think about it: Our phones and tablets go with us everywhere, so they have way more personal data than laptops....

Apple has announced today that it is unable to ship the AirPower charging mat and have cancelled the project, via TechCrunch. In a statement from Dan Riccio, Apple apologized to customers that had been waiting for the product to come out. The AirPower mat was originally announced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone X. Apple was silent on the project for a year and a half, and today confirmed that AirPower is cancelled....

Beginning today, eight flagship Apple stores in seven select cities across the world will host notable Today at Apple sessions throughout the entire month of October. The sessions are being hosted in collaboration with The Big Draw Festival, a global celebration of drawing. Focusing on sketching with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, many of this year’s 108 special sessions will be taught by professional illustrators able to provide creative insight and expert tips....

Following this morning’s news that Apple has acquired Locationary, Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is purchasing the mapping app ‘HopStop’. With this purchase, along with the purchase of including Placebase, C3, Poly9, and now Locationary, it looks like Apple is working hard to improve their mapping apps. Among other complaints about Apple’s Maps, many didn’t like the lack of public transportation options that the previous mapping system provided by Google had....

Apple has pushed back the enforcement of some rules that were previously set to come into effect on January 31st. Firstly, during the first 2020 lockdowns, Apple allowed apps offering realtime group services to use payment methods other than In-App Purchase. This exception was introduced to help businesses trying to adapt to pandemic life. Citing the recent resurgence of COVID, this exception is now being extended to June. Apple has also deferred previously-announced rules that would require apps to offer simple in-app account deletion....

In addition to unveiling iOS 9.3 with new CarPlay features, Apple today has launched a new webpage detailing all of the cars in which its infotainment system is available. On the page, Apple touts that CarPlay is or will soon be available in more than 100 different vehicles models. The list consists of 2016 and 2017 car models only, from a variety of different companies. The full list of manufacturers featured on the page includes Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Citroen, DS Automobiles, Ferrari, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Opel, Porsche, Peugeot, Seat, Skoda, Suzuki, Volkswagen, and Volvo....

In January we told you about a class action lawsuit filed by a Los Angeles man who describes the iPhone 4’s glass back panel as a “design flaw” and claims Apple “refuses to warn consumers” about its susceptibility to cracked glass under normal usage . We already know the iPhone 4S hasn’t made many improvements in terms of the durability of its glass casing, but a new patent application shows exactly what Apple has been working on to better implement a drop-resistant all glass design....

Update: Some are suggesting that the patent could simply be for tiny shifts that would allow the iPhone camera to fill in missing detail that falls between pixels, though it’s unclear how this would differ from a technique already in use by Hasselblad. But an Apple patent granted today could allow future iPhones to take panoramic photos effectively with a single shot....

Shachar Menashe, senior director of security research at JFrog, told ZDNet that even though these new vulnerabilities do not affect Apache Cassandra default installations where User Defined Functions (UDFs) are disabled, many Cassandra configurations enable them, causing the instance to be vulnerable to an RCE or DoS attack. “We recommend looking at your Cassandra configuration and – if UDFs are enabled – take the appropriate steps to remediate,” Menashe said....

The Russian government this month passed new protectionist legislation that may directly affect tech and media companies like Apple, Google, Netflix, and Samsung. Starting July 1, 2020, all computers, smartphones, tablets, and other devices sold in Russia will be required to come with pre-installed Russian software. One of the new requirements is that all devices must have installed by default the internet browser Yandex and other applications developed in Russia. Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple was planning an expansion of its Reno data center, with the company awaiting city approval. Apple has just filed for HealthKit trademarks in both the US and Europe ahead of iOS 8’s launch this fall and in at least one filing includes watches in a list of goods that could take advantage of the health-tracking software. Apple continues to expand its original content road map as the launch of Apple TV+ nears. Variety reports today that Apple has given a series order to Ted Lasso starring Jason Sudeikis. If the Ted Lasso name sounds familiar, it’s because it first appeared in a NBC Sports video from 2013 promoting the network’s expansion to English Premier League games. Now, Sudeikis is bringing the popular character to Apple TV+....
