Following the WWDC keynote, Apple has released the first beta of SF Symbols 3. This latest version of SF Symbols includes over 600 new designs developers and designers can use in their apps. The update also includes a new inspector for seeing details about individual symbols. Apple’s portfolio of symbols now includes updated icons for game controllers, devices, health, and more. There are also now dedicated localized symbols for Arabic, Chinese, Devanagari, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Latin, and Thai....

Data from Yahoo-owned analytics company Flurry shows that iPhones and iPads comprised more than half of all mobile device activations between 19th and 25th December, at 51.3% – almost three times as many as second-placed Samsung. The company notes that while Chinese companies Xiaomi, Huawei and HTC didn’t reach 1%, this reflects the fact that Christmas is not celebrated in their home market … Apple accounted for 51% of the new device activations worldwide Flurry recognized in the week leading up to and including Christmas Day (December 19th – 25th)....

Apple has adjusted the pricing of AppleCare+ plans for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro users, with a notable distinction between Intel and M1-powered machines for the first time. Starting today in the United States and select other countries, AppleCare+ is now cheaper for the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro than for the Intel MacBook Pro. As first spotted by MacRumors, AppleCare+ for the MacBook Air is now $50 cheaper than before, with Apple lowering the price from $249 to $199....

Ahead of the new season premiering on Apple TV+ this Friday, some Apple retail stores are giving out promotional sticker packs featuring Memoji of Ted Lasso. Apple has made a few iMessage sticker packs for other TV+ shows like Snoopy in Space or Dickinson but this is the first time we can recall Apple distributing show-specific promotional materials at Apple retail stores. The sticker pack is a simple set of four featuring the Ted Lasso Memoji character in a variety of poses....

Apple recently introduced several changes to the ways education and enterprise customers can manage iOS device deployments. The first of these changes has to do with how devices are configured before being assigned to employees. Previously IT administrators would have to plug each device into a computer and apply a profile that configured the settings and restrictions. Under the revised program, customers can now order pre-configured devices directly from Apple, cutting out the setup step and allowing for faster, more convenient deployment....

The research companies say Apple is the top retailer in terms of sales per square foot, coming in at $5,546 per square foot… Other notable numbers include the top jeweler, Tiffany & Co, with sales of $2,951 per square foot and top gasoline retailer Murphy USA at $3,721 per square foot....

In a statement to USA Today, Apple has officially announced it has signed up 11 million members to Apple Music since launch. Eddy Cue says he is “thrilled with the numbers so far”, noting that about 2 million of that number have signed up for a family plan, which costs $14.99 for up to six people. The real success of Apple Music won’t be known until the 3 month trial ends and the 11 million have to make the choice to start paying for the monthly subscription....

Apple announced today in a new partnership with Clipper that the Clipper card will soon be supported in the Wallet app and Apple Pay. Users will soon be able to use the card on iPhone and Apple Watch across all the San Francisco Bay Area transit agencies with just a tap without authentication. Due to a security flaw discovered in its Flash Player software, Adobe released an update to the web plugin earlier this week. Today Apple confirmed that it had updated its plugin blacklist for OS X to stop the system from using a version of Flash Player older than 14.0.0.145 (or 13.0.0.231 on older systems). Apple today released iTunes version 11.3 and with it is making its iTunes Extras feature available for HD movies on Macs. Apple also announced today that the feature is now available for Apple TV with update 6.2 and will arrive on iOS 8 this fall. While we’ll have to wait for iTunes Extras to arrive on iOS with the release of iOS 8 this fall, the Apple TV OS 6.2 update rolled out late last month to users alongside iOS 7....

Andreas Gal, the Apple employee involved in a controversial US Customs and Border Protection detainment, is speaking out about his experience. In an interview with ABC News, Gal elaborated on why he feels he was targeted and offered more details on the interaction. Earlier this week, the ACLU revealed that it was filling a complaint alleging that border control officers violated the constitutional rights of Gal. The Apple employee was returning from a business trip to Sweden in November when he was detained at the San Francisco International Airport....

Confirming a claim from earlier today, Bloomberg‘s Adam Satariano reports that Apple has confirmed the hire of former Yves Saint Laurent CEO Paul Deneve. According to Apple, Deneve will report as a Vice President to Apple CEO Tim Cook. Yves Saint Laurent is a high-profile global fashion brand and retailer. Contrary to earlier speculation, Apple says that Deneve will work on “special projects,” not in retail. Apple has been without a de-facto Head of Retail since John Browett’s departure last fall....

After searching long and hard for what I thought you can do, I came to the realization that you can’t. Not in OS X Lion, and from the looks of it, not in Mountain Lion either. So far iCloud has been tailored for use with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. But it hasn’t been completely integrated into OS X.
