China’s O-Film, a camera module manufacturer, told investors today it received a notification from a “particular overseas client” saying it would cut its business ties, according to Reuters. O-Film, which is known as a supplier of camera modules for Apple, said the customer was responsible for 22.51% of its operating income in 2019. In December, a report suggested that Apple was dropping this iPhone camera supplier, following accusations that O-Film used forced labor....

Apple has shared during its education event in Chicago today that student accounts through schools will now get 200GB of iCloud storage for free. A considerable bump from the current 5GB of free iCloud storage, Apple will be giving the 200GB allotment to every student with a managed Apple ID. Keep in mind this won’t work like the Apple Music student discount, where any student with a .edu is eligible. The updated 200GB plans are only for students with school provided Apple IDs....

Following up the official announcement of iCloud and iOS 5 this afternoon, Apple has begun seeding OS X 10.7.2 GM to the Developer Center. Tim Cook has shared photos from his recent trip to China where the Apple CEO spoke to media about upcoming initiatives in the country and visited new Apple retail stores opened in the region. The photos (above and below) were posted to Cook’s new Weibo account. The head Apple exec started posting to the Chinese microblogging site, much like he does on Twitter, earlier this month. Cook spent much of his trip discussing new environmental initiatives announced by the company this month....

Apple has confirmed it will be livestreaming its just-announced March 21st media event, expected to feature several product unveilings including a 4-inch iPhone SE and 9.7 inch iPad Pro. Apple will open at least two new retail stores in Seoul, South Korea, in the near future, as the company is now hiring more employees for another location in the country. As first spotted by Michael Steeber in his Tabletops newsletter, there’s another store planned for eastern Seoul as Apple has positions listed under the location “Seoul East – KR.” This news comes a week after Apple also started to hire employees for new retail store in Greater London, as the company is finally planning new retail after eight years since the last one opened in the United Kingdom....

The latest Apex Legends hero, Octane, was launched to great enthusiasm a few days ago. With plenty of interest aimed at Octane and his tongue-in-cheek origins, it’s now been uncovered that there’s an Apex Legends Octane Titanfall link: the character’s design and concept are actually in reference to a well-known Titanfall 2 speedrunner. Cash Mayo, a well-known Titanfall 2 speedrunner, currently holds the world record for the quickest clear of a map known as The Gauntlet in the game and has footage of it up on YouTube....

Apple is expanding its advertising business and adding two new ad slots to the App Store. Currently, the App Store has two ad slots: one on the main ‘Search’ tab and one in the Search results. The two new App Store ads announced today will bring advertisements to the App Store ‘Today’ homepage, as well as to individual app pages. App Store ads are coming to more places The new advertising placements in the App Store will allow developers to place ads outside of the Search tab and Search results....

According to Bloomberg, Apple and Google are teaming up on a $500 million bid to acquire Kodak’s patent portfolio. Prior to this new bid, several reports had claimed that Apple and Google were leading separate groups of several companies that wanted to acquire Kodak’s patents. Kodak’s patents have become available for acquisition following the company’s move into bankruptcy earlier this year. Bloomberg‘s report also notes that Apple’s previous consortium of potential bidders, prior to this new bid with Google, included Microsoft and Intellectual Ventures Management....
