Spider-Man actor Tom Holland finally responds to the rivalry between him and Avengers: Infinity War co-star Anthony Mackie - and he’s very chill about it. All’s fair in love and war, and Mackie (Falcon) has truly taken that message to heart. For the better part of a few months, Mackie has made a game of picking on his co-star (and friend) Holland. The beef first started in April of 2016 during the press tour for Captain America: Civil War, when a reporter asked if the cast did anything to make newcomers Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) and Holland feel welcome. Mackie then quickly zeroed in on his problems with Holland: “So Tom’s an asshole… Lot of gel, lot of mousse… He’s a lot to deal with.”
But the fun didn’t stop there. In future interviews, Mackie continued to riff on everything from Holland’s thick British accent to his special diet and traveling entourage, all painting him to be some kind of big diva. Mackie and Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier) have even taken their vendetta from interviews to the red carpet and late night talk shows. Of course, the feud is all in jest, as Mackie has in the past had nothing but praise for his co-star and stated earlier this year, before Spider-Man: Homecoming had been released, that Holland is “going to be the best Spider-Man yet.”
Still, that hasn’t stopped Mackie from taking his show on the road. He recently stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote his new movie Detroit and was almost immediately asked by the host about his quarrel with Holland. Highlights of the story were Mackie’s impression of Holland’s squeaky voice and childlike enthusiasm. And it looks like the interview has come to Holland’s attention, since he’s fired back by joining in on the fun with a characteristically Peter Parker retort on Twitter:
I love giving @AnthonyMackie something interesting to talk about. https://t.co/ChSdls9tVM— Tom Holland (@TomHolland1996) August 5, 2017
All evidence to the contrary, it’s nice to see that the Avengers cast gets along great, and they’re comfortable enough with each other to be able to make these kinds of jokes that may or may not be based on real facts. On the one hand, maybe Holland is younger and livelier than his co-stars, and it may get on their nerves a little bit. On the other, it’s likely that Mackie is just hamming it up as much as possible.
His story is certainly getting publicity going for the Avengers, which doesn’t release in theaters until summer next year. Avengers: Infinity War recently finished filming, with the currently untitled Avengers 4 just about to start up.
