During today’s new product announcement, Apple unveiled an all-new addition to the iPhone family. The iPhone 5c (with a lowercase “c”) replaces the iPhone 5 in Apple’s mobile lineup. The 5c features many of the internal components of the previous iPhone 5, but the exterior of the device has been completely redesigned.
Rather than a metal and glass design like that of previous models, the back of the iPhone 5’s casing is made of plastic which comes in a variety of colors. The new device closely resembles the fifth-generation iPod touch, which Apple debuted last year.
Internally, the phone sports the same A6 processor found in the iPhone 5, an 8MP iSight camera, and an improved HD FaceTime camera. All of the usual sensors are also present, such as the accelerometer, GPS, compass, and gyroscope.
In terms of connectivity, the iPhone 5c supports Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, more LTE bands than any other smartphone on the market.
Apple has also created custom silicon cases for the iPhone 5c. These cases will ship for $29 each.
The iPhone 5c will run $99 for the 16 GB model and $199 for 32 GB with a two-year contract. The phone will be available for pre-order on Friday September 13th and will ship on the 20th. While the contract version of the phone will only be available on Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon, an unlocked version for T-Mobile is also available. That version will cost $549 for the 16 GB model and $649 for the 32 GB.
