Yesterday’s unveiling of the all-new Mac Pro at Apple’s WWDC keynote certainly made up for the fact that we didn’t see any updates to Apple’s pro apps like we we’re hoping. However, you might have missed Phil Schiller’s rather quick confirmation that a new version of Final Cut Pro X is indeed coming later this year:
Schiller didn’t go into specific features that we’ll be seeing in the new version, but support for the new Mac Pro means support for the machine’s dual workstation GPUs and AMD FirePro Graphics, something that many other pro apps will need to update in order to support. We also know the new Mac Pro will support multiple streams of 4K displays for support for up to three 4K displays (as pictured above).
With Apple’s recent campaign to win back skeptical pro users to Final Cut Pro X, we’d imagine the new version of Final Cut Pro X coming later this year will also include a number of other features that pros have been missing since Apple scaled back the software’s feature set with a new design two years ago.
Speaking of those new Mac Pros, it looks like some pros are already having doubts about Apple’s new direction for its pro lineup. A post on netkas.org points out that the new Mac Pro appears to only allow for upgradable memory and disk, making it much closer to a Mac Mini in terms of customization compared to the highly upgradeable designs of previous generation Mac Pros. Of course, there’s a lot we don’t know about the machine yet, and we’ll have to wait to get our hands on it to be sure of its limitations.
Plus it is much closer in lineage to the Mac Cube anyway.
