Apple’s WWDC festivities are officially about to kick off at 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST) with the company’s keynote presentation, but it appears to already be hinting at car related announcements with several sports cars, classic cars and other vehicles displayed around the Moscone West venue.
Apple officially launched CarPlay, an iPhone feature that enables an iOS-like interface on in-car touchscreen systems, earlier this year after first unveiling the feature at WWDC last year. Apple announced several car manufacturers that would be releasing vehicles later this year with built-in support for CarPlay, one of which was Ferrari, and it later confirmed that it would allow third-parties like Alpine and Pioneer to release aftermarket systems for older vehicles.
It’s not just Ferraris, however. We’ve also been told that classic cars and other vehicles are displayed around the event hinting that Apple could have plans to talk more about the aftermarket support it confirmed earlier this year. If Apple is planning to talk and show off aftermarket solutions, like the in-dash units that Pioneer is already selling and about to enable CarPlay support for, perhaps it will use a gorgeous classic car to do it.
Mercedes, Volvo, Hyundai, and Ferrari have announced availability of new vehicles with CarPlay coming this year, and Apple has confirmed other partners working on the tech including BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, Jaguar, Kia, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota. It’s possible Apple could be planning to talk more about aftermarket solutions or announce availability of vehicles from some of its partners, but we’ll have to wait until later today to find out for sure.
