Apple shared new numbers for the App Store today announcing that last week set a new record for App Store billings. According to the company, customers have spent almost $500 million dollars through app and in-app purchases over the App Store through the first week in January.. In addition to the company’s App Store record announcement, Apple has presented a new microsite focused on its job creation efforts. Apple described its previous year as record breaking for the App Store noting a 50% increase in billings, developers earning more than $10 billion collectively from revenue, and $25 billion cumulatively earned from app sales in total....

Apple continues to move away from the iTunes brand this week. Now, when you view an iOS or Mac app listing on the web, the URL is based on apps.apple.com, whereas it was previously itunes.apple.com. This isn’t the first URL structure that Apple has updated as part of its move away from iTunes. Earlier this year, the Podcasts web interface got a major overhaul, which included moving to podcasts.apple.com, as opposed to itunes....

When Apple introduced the Apple TV 4K in 2017, the Siri Remote had a small change with a white ring around the Menu button, which made it be identified as a new model. Apple and Google created a coronavirus contact tracing API to help governments create their own apps – but an initial report suggests that take-up hasn’t been high. Just 22 countries and a handful of US states have so far requested access, and a subsequent iOS and Android update to allow contact tracing to work without an app appears to be some months away. Some countries have created contact tracing apps that involve huge infringements of privacy....

Apple has contacted some local Apple users in Spain to announce that its new Barcelona location will open on Saturday, July 28th at 10 AM. Apple surprisingly began to show a repair index for devices like the iPhone and Mac in the Apple Store app and the Apple Online Store in France this week. Users can now get a better idea of how easy it is to repair that device before buying it. As reported by MacGeneration, the index is related to local regulations set by the Minister of Ecological Transition. There are five different criteria used to determine the index for each device, which include ease of disassembly and availability of parts needed for repair....

Apple released iOS 15.5 in May with enhancements to the Podcasts app, Apple Cash, and overall bug fixes. However, it seems that the update also caused some issues for Apple Books users as the app stopped working for some people after the iOS 15.5 update. It’s unclear at this point how many users have been affected by the bug, but App Store reviews for the Apple Books app corroborate that there are a reasonable number of users experiencing some issues with the app....

Update: Apple reached out and pointed out a support page from September 2021 saying the company intended to offer “important security updates” for iOS and iPadOS 14 users for “a period of time.” While it was once rumored that it could be a bug, Apple told Ars Technica that it didn’t intend to let users stay forever on iOS 14. In fact, the company wanted this to be only a “temporary” option....

During Q2 of this year, Zoom completely shattered the previous App Store record for downloads, previously set by TikTok, according to analytics data. While TikTok notched up 67 million US downloads in Q1, reports Sensor Tower, Zoom hit almost 94 million US downloads in Q2. Demand for the videoconferencing app was of course driven by the coronavirus crisis, which saw record numbers of people working from home.
