We’ve already seen that analysts are expecting big things from Apple’s earnings in the final quarter of last year, and the latest numbers from Counterpoint Research lend support for that optimism. The company estimates that within the USA Apple sold a total of 22.39M iPhones across all models in Q4 2017 – pushing its US market share to a record 44% … Counterpoint says this is particularly impressive given consumer reluctance to upgrade....

This Friday afternoon, Apple has opened up an iPhone 5 battery replacement program after discovering that a “very small percentage” of units “may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently.” The iPhone 5 was originally launched in September 2012, and Apple says that the affected units were sold between that month and January 2013. Apple’s support website includes a tool to check if your serial number belongs to a faulty iPhone 5…...

China Daily (via ZDNet) reports that Apple has been ordered by a court to pay 730,000 Yuan ($118,000) to three Chinese authors as their books were apparently uploaded to the iTunes Store without permission. The uploads appear to have been made by third-parties rather than by Apple directly, and it’s unclear who did upload them, but the court ruled that Apple has a duty to ensure that uploads don’t breach copyright....

Apple on Thursday fired senior engineering program manager Ashley Gjøvik for allegedly violating company policies on leaking private corporate information. Gjøvik has been relaying on Twitter how she felt about how Apple handles situations of sexism and harassment among its employees. Last month, Gjøvik said in an interview about how she had been raising concerns about sexism at Apple for years while the company never offered her an ideal solution to the problem....

Alongside the new MacBook Pros, Apple has added a new first party polishing cloth to the Apple Store. The new polishing cloth is a soft white with an embossed Apple logo. Apple does not specify what material it is made out of. It’s priced at $19.00 and Apple says it’s compatible with every single device they make.

A new, star-studded trailer has been released for NBA 2k19, featuring Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Infinity War) and Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense). The basketball-centric video game is the latest installment of the popular, long-running franchise developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. The latter is a division of 2K Games, which in turn is a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, which is also responsible for games of such varying genres as WWE 2K franchise, Red Dead Redemption, and even the increasingly unhackable Grand Theft Auto V....

In an attempt to remind their fellow Apex Legends players of how easy it is to blow a wild amount of money on loot boxes, one gamer admits to having spent $500 on Apex Packs in their pursuit of unlocking the game’s rarest item set. Apex Legends is a massively popular and incredibly well-received free-to-play battle royale game by Respawn Entertainment, the creators of the Titanfall series. It looks like Apple’s Developer Center is getting a visual refresh as the developer center account page has been updated today with some notable changes. The main view after signing in has gone through a reorganization, making accessing various sections much easier. Moving primary links into a left sidebar view, developer’s can now quickly access their CloudKit Dashboard, Documentation, and even the Bug Reporter. Though none of the links or resources on the visually refreshed page are considered new to developers, Apple has done a nice job of making them more prominent and easier to find....

While there’s a lot of controversy regarding the App Store (whether Apple should let users have the option to pay for apps off it), governments and third-party developers continue to raise questions regarding if the store is a monopoly or not, the company could soon face another controversy as it is piloting tests that allow developers to automatically charge users for subscription price increases. As first reported by TechCrunch, developer Max Seelemann posted on his Twitter that his Disney+ subscription price increased as “mere notice instead of having to confirm” it....

Apple has announced that it is expanding the availability of Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager features to new locations. As it continues to ramp up its focus on video content, Apple has recently hired a former YouTube and Spotify executive.
